Location

Over seven centuries ago the first human settlers arrived in Aotearoa (New Zealand). They came in eight great migrations which are identified in Maori tradition by the name of the commander’s waka (canoe). One of these migrations was under the command of Tamatekapua whose Arawa canoe landed in what is now known as the Bay of Plenty in the place we call Maketu.

Since the arrival of the first Te Arawa waka, there has been a continuous settlement in the village of Maketu. The Arawa tribe prospered in Maketu due to the temperate climate and abundant fishing.

Maketu is surrounded by the beauty of the sea. The village of about 1,000 retains much of the character of a close knit community that has existed for over seven centuries.
